10 Important Life Lessons I Wish I'd Learned Sooner
Growth and reflecting on your experiences are essential components of personal development and self-discovery.
As we age, we find opportunities to grow and evolve in various, if not all aspects of our lives. Our experiences and mistakes work as a series of tests and assignments that act as learning curves.
In 2024, I had some significant life changes that made me question everything I thought I knew. I moved to a different continent, switched careers and had to unlearn a lot of things so I could adapt and fit into the new environment.
Now, a year and a half later, I look back and realize that through that time, I faced a handful of important life lessons that have changed my life - but it would have saved me some time, grief and frustration if I knew them sooner…
One Positive Action
Name the Narrative
Your brain is always trying to make sense of things. When something feels uncertain or unclear, it jumps in to fill the gaps, creating explanations and stories about what’s really happening. It’s a protetctive mechanism, but sometimes, those stories can cause more stress than the situation itself.
How often do you assume you know what someone else meant, why they acted a certain way, or what they must be thinking? Most of the time, you’re guessing. Your brain hates uncertainty, so it grabs whatever evidence it can find like past experiences or insecurities, and turns them into a narrative that feels true. The problem is, those narratives are just familiar patterns you have percieved that help you to feel like you’re in control. They aren’t necessarily factual.
You can’t stop your brain from filling in the blanks, but you can stop treating those thoughts as truth. The next time you catch yourself jumping to a conclusion, pause and remind yourself: That’s only one possible interpretation. You don’t need to replace it with a positive story, but acknowledge that your first thought might not be the only explanation. This will help you remain open, instead of reactive as you go about your day.
For the next few days, notice when you start making assumptions about what others are thinking or why something happened. When it happens, say to yourself, “That’s one possible interpretation,” and come up with two other gentle explanations that could also be true. You’ll feel calmer, more grounded, and more present in reality, not the story your mind created to fill in the blanks.
