Executive Functioning: Why It’s SO Important - Even If You Have Never Heard of It
Does this sound familiar?
You’re in the midst of a busy work day - juggling multiple projects at once - but you find yourself thinking about what you’ll have for dinner or how you’ll coordinate your weekend plans.
Then your phone buzzes. You reach for it, completely throwing yourself into another train of thought. Or perhaps you absentmindedly reach for your phone and begin doom scrolling (without even fully realizing you’re doing so!).
And this sort of jumping from task to task (sometimes, forgetting what you were even thinking about or doing) continues all day long…
Talk about exhausting!
But if this sounds like a typical day (or similar), you aren’t alone. In fact, technology has made it that much easier to have problems with…
Brain Fog, Missed Deadlines, and Meltdowns: Let’s Talk Executive Function
Ever stare at a to-do list that somehow got longer overnight… and suddenly feel paralyzed?
Or maybe you’ve walked into a room and completely forgotten why you’re there…again. The deadline that slipped past. The emotional meltdown over something small. The feeling that your brain is buffering like a bad internet connection.
Sound familiar?
If so, you’re not alone, and you’re not broken. These might be signs that your executive functioning is running on low battery.
Executive what?
Think of it as your brain’s behind-the-scenes manager. It's the system responsible for helping you…
One Positive Action
Do a 10-minute skill swap:
You’d be surprised at what little skills or bits of knowledge you carry that someone else doesn’t. But instead of sharing this knowledge, we all just stay in our own little skill bubbles, missing out on all the cool stuff other people could teach us.
A skill swap is a simple, but fun activity, you teach someone something you're good at for 10 minutes, then they return the favor and teach you their best skill for 10 minutes. Maybe you show your roommate how to make a really solid grilled cheese, and they teach you that phone photography trick they always use. The key is keeping it short and practical - stuff you can actually learn and use right away.
What's awesome about this is how it makes you realize how much knowledge you actually have to share. Most of us don't think we're "experts" at anything, but everyone has little tricks and skills they've picked up over the years. Plus, teaching someone else actually makes you better at whatever you're teaching, you have to think through your process and explain it clearly. And learning something new from someone you know is way easier to pick up than some random YouTube tutorial. It's like getting a mini masterclass from a friend.
Think of one thing you're genuinely good at, then find someone in your life who might benefit from learning it. Text them and say "Hey, want to do a quick skill swap? I'll teach you [your thing] if you teach me something you're good at." Set aside 20 minutes total - 10 minutes each way. You'll both walk away having learned something new, and you might be surprised by how much fun it is to be both teacher and student in the same conversation.
