Brain Fog, Missed Deadlines, and Meltdowns: Let’s Talk Executive Function

Ever stare at a to-do list that somehow got longer overnight… and suddenly feel paralyzed?

Or maybe you’ve walked into a room and completely forgotten why you’re there…again. The deadline that slipped past. The emotional meltdown over something small. The feeling that your brain is buffering like a bad internet connection.

Sound familiar?

If so, you’re not alone, and you’re not broken. These might be signs that your executive functioning is running on low battery.

Executive what?

Think of it as your brain’s behind-the-scenes manager. It's the system responsible for helping you…

Self-Regulation: How to Better Manage Your Reactions to Emotional Triggers

Emotional triggers used to be a real pain in my relationships.

Whenever my partner said or did something that struck a nerve, I'd feel this surge of anger, like a volcano about to erupt. But instead of letting it out, I'd stuff it down, lock it away in an emotional dungeon, and just shut down.

I thought I was being the mature one, avoiding unnecessary fights, but I was wrong!

It wasn't helpful at all.

It was like a time bomb ticking away inside me - and it always went off eventually, leading to bigger and messier arguments.

Learning to deal with those triggers and express my feelings more constructively was a game-changer for me…

Your Weekend Reset

Ready for a weekly reset? Try a few of these tips to unwind, connect, or get creative. We’ve got you covered to make the most of your downtime!

  • Dance in your kitchen: Put on a song that makes you feel something, happy, nostalgic, powerful, whatever, and get moving! Dance like you're alone (because you are), dance like you're celebrating something (because you should be). Sometimes the quickest way to shift your energy is to literally shake it off.

  • Look through old photos: If you’ve got an actual old photo album, haul that out, otherwise, flip back in your phone’s camera roll to as far back as it’ll go and spend some time with the past version of you. Notice what you were doing, who you were with, what made you happy enough to capture. It's amazing how quickly we forget the good moments, and sometimes we need to remind ourselves of all the joy we've already lived.

  • Make a list of things you're proud of: Think of all of the little personal victories you’ve had throughout your life that have made you proud. Maybe they’re a common story you share with friends, or something you haven’t thought of in years. Grab a pen and paper and write them down and read them back to yourself. We're so quick to catalog our failures and so slow to acknowledge our growth. Give yourself credit for the person you've become.

  • Book Recommendation: Untamed by Glennon Doyle - If you want to stop being who everyone else wants you to be, and start being yourself instead, this is the book for you! The author talks about leaving her marriage, falling in love with a woman, and figuring out what she actually wants versus what she thought she was supposed to want. Fair warning: you might end up questioning some of your own life choices, but in a good way.
