The Genuine Power Of Tears: Crying is Good for You

My family and I were recently playing a card game where we had to ask each other insightful questions.

One question was, “Who was the last person that saw you cry?”

I could tell the question made the men in the room uncomfortable, and I wasn’t feeling that great about it either.

Why is there such a stigma around crying?

The fact that we still feel embarrassed to admit we do it - or feel like we have to hide it -  is unfortunate - because tears have a remarkable power to heal…

The Benefits of Dance Therapy: How Can This Body Based Therapy Help You Heal?

Have you ever noticed how your body seems to "remember" certain emotions - how a particular stretch, posture, or movement can suddenly bring a wave of unexpected feeling?

That’s no coincidence.

Our bodies hold memories just as vividly as our minds do, and dance therapy taps into that powerful connection.

Dance therapy isn’t just about moving to the beat - it’s about moving through pain, emotion, and memory…

One Positive Action

Start a “Tear Journal”:

If you've read today's article, you already know that crying is truly healing. If you haven’t, scroll back up and give it a read, I’ll wait here. Done? Good. As you know, crying is a natural, powerful way to process emotions and release tension. Whether it's from sadness, joy, or relief, tears help us reconnect with ourselves. So, let’s embrace crying as an important part of our emotional well-being, not something to suppress or feel ashamed of.

We often carry around unprocessed emotions, and these can build up over time, making us feel overwhelmed or stuck. Crying is a natural release, but without a way to process what’s behind the tears, the emotions can stay trapped inside. Starting a “tear journal” provides a safe space for you to unload all that emotional weight. It allows you to express what you’re feeling, letting go of the burdens that hold you back. Writing about your tears gives you the freedom to release what no longer serves you.

As you begin this practice, you’ll start to see how your tears aren’t moments of weakness, but acts of self-care. Each entry in your tear journal is a step toward understanding and processing your emotions, allowing you to heal and grow. Over time, you’ll notice patterns in your emotional responses and gain a deeper sense of awareness. This practice doesn’t just help you release; it helps you learn more about yourself, and in turn, become more compassionate toward your own vulnerability.

Start your tear journal today by writing one entry. Reflect on a recent experience that made you cry or almost cry, and describe it in detail. Don’t hold back, be honest. Be vulnerable. Let your emotions guide your writing. After you've written about the experience, take a few moments to close your eyes and feel it again. Let yourself cry if it comes up. But as you sit with those feelings, remind yourself that you are more than this moment, more than the pain. You are growing through it, and each step you take in understanding your emotions is a step toward healing.
