Self-Regulation: How to Better Manage Your Reactions to Emotional Triggers
Emotional triggers used to be a real pain in my relationships.
Whenever my partner said or did something that struck a nerve, I'd feel this surge of anger, like a volcano about to erupt. But instead of letting it out, I'd stuff it down, lock it away in an emotional dungeon, and just shut down.
I thought I was being the mature one, avoiding unnecessary fights, but I was wrong!
It wasn't helpful at all.
It was like a time bomb ticking away inside me - and it always went off eventually, leading to bigger and messier arguments.
Learning to deal with those triggers and express my feelings more constructively was a game-changer for me…
Can Urge Surfing Actually Help You Change Unwanted Behavior?
“The man who overcomes his desires is braver than he who overcomes his enemies.” - Aristotle
While our modern era prides itself on science and knowledge, the brain continues to remain much of a mystery.
We have a lot of theories, often associated with evolution, as to why people behave in certain ways or why people experience strong emotions. Yet, it isn’t an exact science by any means.
And innate urges are part of this! At the end of the day, we all have urges. Our hunger drives us to eat. The reward center of our brain might further prompt us to buy a product or indulge in a meaningless one-night stand…
One Positive Action
Take a photo walk:
When's the last time you actually looked at your neighborhood? Like really looked? Most of us walk the same routes on autopilot, head down, thinking about work, rushing to get somewhere. We miss all the fun little details that make our corner of the world interesting. That quirky garden gnome someone added to their front yard, the way the light hits that old brick building at 3pm, the cat that always sits in the same window. There's probably cool stuff happening right outside your door that you've never even noticed because you're too busy being in your head.
Grab your phone and spend 20 minutes wandering around your neighborhood with one mission: find 10 things worth photographing. It doesn’t matter if you’re not a great photographer, just look for things that make you think "huh, that's interesting." Your goal is just to wake up your brain and start seeing your familiar world with fresh eyes.
You'll be surprised at how much cool stuff you've been walking past every day without noticing. You start paying attention to details, colors, and patterns instead of just cruising along on auto-pilot. The best part is how it shifts your perspective, suddenly your "boring" neighborhood becomes this interesting place full of little discoveries. You'll start noticing new things even when you're not trying to.
Your challenge today is to find 10 things that catch your eye, whatever that may be and take a pic of each one. Take a different route than usual if you can, or just walk your normal path but pretend you're a tourist seeing it for the first time. When you get back, look through your photos and I guarantee you'll be surprised by what you found. Bonus points if you share one with someone - "Look at this cool thing I found in my neighborhood!"
