Triggers Aren’t Setbacks: How to Learn from Emotional Flashpoints

You’re having a decent day. Maybe even a good one.

Then out of nowhere - bam - something someone says hits a nerve. Your heart races. Your mood shifts. You feel thrown off, flooded with emotion, and wondering, Why is this bothering me so much?

Cue the inner critic: I thought I was over this.

But here’s the thing; you are healing. Triggers don’t mean you’re broken or back at square one. They mean something inside you is calling for attention, for understanding, for care.

What if, instead of treating emotional flashpoints like proof of failure, we saw them as powerful checkpoints on the path to growth?

In this article, we’re flipping the script on triggers…

FOMO – Why the Fear of Missing Out Can Be Hazardous to Your Mental Health

FOMO: The fear of missing out. The fear that you'll be left behind. That you will miss a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The fear that keeps you on the edge – waiting for the next big and awesome thing.

It may be your deep concern not to miss a reunion, a party, an important announcement, or miss the chance to be somewhere amazing, taste something tantalizing, or be with someone you think is drop-dead gorgeous.

FOMO is an insatiable desire for the next great thing.

But paradoxically, it also ruins the next great thing, because we fail to appreciate it whilst looking for the next greater thing…

One Positive Action

Make a “Feel-Good” Playlist:

Remember back in the before times when burning CD's was a thing? I'd made a "Happy CD" and drew a big smiley face on it in thick, black permanent marker. Was it genius? I sure thought so. Was it madness? Probably. It was, however, most assuredly art. Never before had such an eclectic, ridiculous mix of music been put together in one place, but somehow, it just worked.

Think about it, music is one of those rare things that can literally change your mood with the flick of a switch. If you’re feeling sluggish, or down, and that song comes on and suddenly, you’re tapping your foot, your mood lifts, and you’re pumped? That’s the power of a good playlist.

Now, it’s time to create your own bit of musical magic. Build a playlist that you want to listen to, chances are no one but you will ever listen to it, so just pick whatever makes you feel that little bit of something. Maybe it’s a song that gets your body moving, one that makes you sing at the top of your lungs, or just something that gives you the right energy for whatever you’re facing. If it makes you smile, add it. If it makes you want to dance around your living room, add it.

Get started on your playlist right now. Just add whatever songs you know will make you feel good. Take 15 minutes to build it today. And then? Use it! Play it when you need that little pick me up. Let your personal playlist work its magic, and remember, sometimes, a great song is all you need to turn the day around.
