FOMO – Why the Fear of Missing Out Can Be Hazardous to Your Mental Health

FOMO: The fear of missing out. The fear that you'll be left behind. That you will miss a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The fear that keeps you on the edge – waiting for the next big and awesome thing.

It may be your deep concern not to miss a reunion, a party, an important announcement, or miss the chance to be somewhere amazing, taste something tantalizing, or be with someone you think is drop-dead gorgeous.

FOMO is an insatiable desire for the next great thing.

But paradoxically, it also ruins the next great thing, because we fail to appreciate it whilst looking for the next greater thing.

What is FOMO and Why is it Dangerous?

When to Push Through and When to Pause: Listening to Your Mental Health

In a world where the dialogue around bullying is often centered on children and schools, the reality of adult bullying remains a less-discussed - yet equally critical issue.

Whether you’re experiencing bullying at work, amongst family, or within friend groups, it all hits the same and can be psychologically damaging.

The hard part is that, as adults, this isn’t entirely something we expect from other adults. Yet, here's a friendly reminder: We can’t control others, but we can control ourselves…

Your Weekend Reset

Ready for a weekly reset? Try a few of these tips to unwind, connect, or get creative. We’ve got you covered to make the most of your downtime!

  • Find some water and drink it in (metaphorically): We’re deeply connected to water. Ocean, lake, river, pond, it doesn’t matter. Just being near it has been proven to help reduce anxiety and bring about a sense of mental quiet. Running water, splashing waves, even the stillness of a pond, it can settle your nervous system without you having to do a thing. Go and sit. Skip some stones if there’s some good ones handy, if not just sit and watch, and let yourself get hypnotized by the waves, or subtle ripples. Let it slow you down.

  • Recreate a childhood snack: Pick something you loved as a kid, Kool-Aid, Mac and Cheese with bits of hotdog sliced into it, whatever it is, make it just the way you remember, extra sugar, lumps, and all. There’s something about revisiting foods from your childhood, the smells, tastes, and textures can instantly bring you back to a time when everything felt new, everything was ‘easy’. It’s valuable if even for a minute you get to experience that version of you again, maybe it can remind you that there’s more joy in simple pleasures, and life doesn’t have to be so serious after all.

  • Watch the sun set with a drink: If you’ve got a good viewing area already, congrats, you’re set! If not, head out to somewhere that lets you watch the sun sink below the horizon. Grab your drink of choice, and just watch it all unfold. It’s so easy to get caught up in our day to day that we forget the simple things, sometimes we just need to look up.

  • Book Recommendation: The Book of Delights by Ross Gay - This one’s exactly what it sounds like… a book of delights! It’s a bunch of quick little essays about the weird, tiny things that make life feel good, if even for a second. Some are sweet, some are a bit sad, some are a bit strange. If you ever need a reminder of how to celebrate ordinary wonders, this is a great place to start.
