When to Push Through and When to Pause: Listening to Your Mental Health

Are you just unmotivated?

Or are you heading straight toward burnout or another type of mental health crisis?

Sometimes, it can be hard to differentiate between the two. But getting to know yourself here is undeniably important. And it can save you tons of angst and exhaustion later on down the line.

  • So, what are the signs that you should push through?

  • In contrast, what are the signs you should hit the pause button?

  • And, most importantly, what should you do after you recognize these signs?

Below, we take a closer look!

The Victor and Victim Mindset & How to Flip the Script to Take Back Control

We are all subject to life's inevitable harsh conditions and challenges.

It could be the weather, culture, gender stereotypes, or genetic predispositions, to mention a few. Hence, we are all faced with a myriad of impediments, yet what differentiates us – and the quality of life we ultimately leadis our mindset.

We are all driven by a mindset - a collection of thoughts and beliefs (acquired over time) that shape our habits and actions. It dictates how we perceive and approach the world around us - how we think, feel, and (re)act in any given situation…

One Positive Action

Nourish your soul and plan a ‘self-date’:

We often forget about the most important person we need to care for: ourselves. We spend so much time working, taking care of others, or just getting through the day that we forget to stop and focus on what we need. A “self-date” is a simple way to take a break, have some fun, and recharge. Sometimes taking time for a self-date (don’t worry, it’s nothing weird!) is exactly what we need.

A self-date is simple: it’s just time you set aside for yourself to do something you enjoy. To really treat yourself. Do something that’s just for you, something you love, but isn’t a part of your day-to-day. Maybe there’s a cheesy tourist attraction you’ve always wanted to visit, but never had the time. Maybe your self date looks like booking a spa day for an ultimate pampering. It’s just you, doing something you enjoy.

For me, I like a drive down the coast and a walk along the beach in the rain. Throw in a hot coffee in a travel mug and some sugary snacks and I’m in introvert-hermit heaven. Maybe your ideal self-date is a hot bath, a glass of wine, or just a comfy chair and a good book. Just do something that makes you feel relaxed and happy, something that takes you away from work or stress and just lets you enjoy the moment. A mini-vacation if you will.

Today, choose a time this week for your self-date. Plan it, then make sure it happens. No excuses. Whether it’s an hour, the whole afternoon, or if you’re really feeling fancy, the whole weekend, this is your time. Get excited for it, this is your special time, this is important, and you’re going to have a blast! Once the dust clears on whatever perfect day you had planned, you should feel a little lighter, a little clearer, and a little more ready to take on the next challenge.
