Ignorance vs. Malice: When Did We Stop Giving Each Other the Benefit of the Doubt?
Someone cuts you off in traffic. A coworker sends a one-word email. A friend leaves you on read for two days.
And just like that, your brain has already written the story. They did that on purpose. They don't care. They're out to get me. Yup, we’ve all been there…
In fact, many of us maybe do this more than we’d like to admit. Somewhere along the way, we stopped assuming the best in people and started assuming the worst. Every sideways glance, every unreturned text, every slightly off-tone comment gets filed under “personal attack.”
But most of the time, it’s not about us at all. Somewhere along the way, we lost trust in each other… so, what’s going on here? Well, let’s get a few definitions out of the way first…
One Positive Action
Pause Before The Next
Most days move in a chain of tasks. You finish one thing and immediately reach for the next but there is rarely a clear break between them. Work ends and you check your phone or move on to the next responsibility. The pace continues without much space to reset.
Over time, that constant lack of transition wears down your attention. Your mind never fully finishes one moment before it enters the next. Even when the day is not especially busy, it can still feel crowded. A short pause can change that feeling of overwhelm.
When you allow a brief moment between tasks, your mind has time to settle. The previous task closes and your attention clears before the next one begins. It takes very little time, but it prevents the feeling of being pulled forward all day.
This pause doesn’t need to become a ritual. It is simply a moment to breathe, look around, and reset your attention before moving on.
Small pauses bring structure to a day that might otherwise feel rushed.
After finishing one task today, pause for thirty seconds before starting the next. Do nothing during that moment; just breathe and allow the last task to end, then move forward with your full attention.
