Your Sense of Self: What it is & 10 Ways You Can Develop It
Believe it or not, our minds have the ability to play tricks on us, otherwise known as cognitive distortions.
One such distortion is mind reading, where we make assumptions about what others are thinking or feeling without any concrete evidence.
It's like a psychic power gone awry, as we convince ourselves that we know exactly what someone else is thinking, when in reality, we are just projecting our own insecurities and fears onto them.
Have you ever done that? Jumped to a conclusion about someone or a situation, only to find out later that you were completely off?
This can certainly impact our relationships and mental well-being.

One Positive Action
Are You Choosing Your Role, Or Is It Choosing You?
We all slip into different versions of ourselves depending on who we're with. We might be the reliable organizer with family, the entertainer with friends, or the problem-solver at work. These roles aren't good or bad, they're simply patterns we've developed over time and ways we have adapted our personalities based on social situations.
Role recognition is about noticing whether you're consciously choosing these roles or automatically falling into them (maybe unwillingly?). Sometimes we love being the cheerleader because it brings us joy to support our loved ones. Other times, we might feel stuck always being the peacekeeper or fix-it person in our relationships. This awareness gives you the power to celebrate roles that serve you while gently shifting away from ones that feel draining.
During your social interactions with different relationships in your life (family, friends, coworkers, etc.) notice what role you step into with different people. Are you the listener, advice-giver, entertainer, problem-solver or caretaker? After these interactions reflect a little bit by asking yourself “Did I choose this role, or did it choose me?" Observe with curiosity (no judgment needed), and use role recognition as a self-awareness tool for the social situations in your life.
