5 Ways to Improve Your Cognitive Flexibility & Why it Matters

When plans crumble, when problems arise, or when something requires a fresh perspective, they can usually navigate these situations with greater ease, pushing past them and achieving their goal.

Irish playwright and critic George Bernard Shaw said it best:

“The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.”

This adaptability demonstrates neuroplasticity in action. It also allows us to take control of our world and reality, rather than the other way around. And what makes a person particularly adaptable is their cognitive flexibility - a key component of executive functioning.

So, what is cognitive flexibility anyway? How can it help you adapt and become overall a better person?

What's Your EQ? 7 Signs of Emotional Intelligence & 5 Ways to Improve Yours

Having emotions is one of the incredible wonders of the human experience.

And as most cases would have it, you often can’t have the good without the bad. We all experience a varying range of emotions.

Yet, some of us tend to manage them better than others, and this all comes down to your emotional intelligence (EQ).

So, how is your emotional intelligence?

One Positive Action

Organize a small space; declutter your mind

Today's action is beautifully simple: choose one small space in your home and organize it completely. We're talking about a single drawer, one shelf, your bedside table, or even just the corner of your desk. The goal is not to tackle your entire home at once, but sort out clutter one manageable space at a time.

Start by emptying your chosen space completely, then clean it with a quick wipe-down. Sort everything into three piles: keep, relocate to another room, or let go entirely. Finally, put back only what belongs there, grouping similar items together with the most-used things in easy reach. The entire process should take 15-20 minutes maximum.

When our physical spaces feel chaotic, our minds often mirror that energy. Organizing just one small area creates an immediate sense of control and accomplishment that can shift your entire mood. This simple act reduces cognitive overload, builds momentum for positive changes, and serves as a form of mindfulness practice.

Right now, look around and pick the smallest, most manageable space you can see. Set a timer for 15 minutes and follow the process above. Take a quick before and after photo if you want to celebrate your progress. Notice how this small victory makes you feel, and carry that energy into the rest of your day.
