Doing the Shadow Work: 5 Big Takeaways on Facing Your Dark Side
Shadow work has been one of the best emotional healing tools I’ve used thus far in life.
I’ve had several “dark nights of the soul” that caused me intense emotional distress.
My first “dark night,” I was flat broke with no money to invest in counseling. That’s not a great space to be in when life seems to be toppling over you day after day.
However, I didn’t let low funds stop me from trying to crawl out of the darkness. In fact, that’s when I started learning about inner healing work, or what some call shadow work.
Digging into the shadow side of the psyche has actually become quite popular in recent years. Kudos to the Swiss psychologist, Carl Jung, who brought the shadow work concept onto the scene back in the 20th century…
Your Sense of Self: What it is & 10 Ways You Can Develop It
How many of us become clueless when asked about ourselves?
It is easy to know and understand people around us, but looking in the mirror and properly seeing ourselves might not be easy. We tend to be blinded by what we think we are and that gets in the way of us properly understanding who we are and working towards who we want to be.
Having a sense of self does not come naturally to us, it's something we have to actively work towards achieving.
So let's take a look! What is a sense of self?
One Positive Action
Try Temptation Bundling:
We all have little tasks we need to do, but keep avoiding doing for whatever reason. (for me it’s putting the laundry away, I just… can’t do it!) Then we have stuff we actually want to do, binge watch that show, play that game, etc. Usually these two lists stay completely separate, which is why the boring stuff never gets done and we feel guilty when we spend our time on the fun things.
Temptation bundling fixes this by pairing something you need to do with something you genuinely enjoy. Only listen to your favorite podcast while doing dishes. Only watch your show on streaming while folding laundry. You're basically bribing yourself with something good to get through something tedious. Your brain starts associating the boring task with the reward, making it way easier to actually do.
What's great is how it removes the guilt from both activities. You're not "wasting time" watching TV because you're also being productive. You're not dreading the chore because you get to do something fun at the same time. Plus, you'll actually look forward to cleaning when it means you get to catch up on your stories.
Pick one task you've been avoiding and one thing you enjoy doing. Bundle them together and only allow yourself the enjoyable thing while doing the boring thing. Your brain will start craving the productive activity because it knows the reward is coming with it.
