Letting Go of Grudges: Psychological Techniques for Releasing Resentment

Have you ever held a grudge against someone? Have others held one against you?

If so, then you know that resentment can weigh pretty heavily on you, like a shadow that looms over your heart and mind.

Resentment can sprout from a range of situations:

  • misunderstandings

  • hurtful comments

  • childhood trauma

  • perceived injustices

  • deep-seated grievances

One Positive Action

Old Picture, New Perspective

Time has a way of moving so fast that we forget how much we have grown as individuals. One way to reconnect with your self-growth journey is to revisit an old photo of yourself. Not for only for the nostalgia alone but to reflect on your growth and offer the compassion that your past self may have needed but didn’t know how to ask for.

When you look at a younger version of yourself—maybe a smiling face hiding struggle, or a wide-eyed dreamer unsure of their path—what do you feel? What would you say to that version of you now, knowing everything you’ve lived through? This practice brings a wave of self-awareness and emotional clarity. It reminds you that you’ve survived, evolved, and become someone your younger self would be proud of.

There’s healing in acknowledging your past self—not to dwell there, but to connect the dots between who you were and who you are now. Often, we overlook the resilience that was being built in those quieter, harder seasons. Taking time to revisit that version of you with kindness invites gratitude and helps soften the inner critic that still echoes at times.

Find an old photo of yourself—perhaps from 5, 10, or even 20 years ago. Spend a few quiet moments looking at it, then write a short note to that version of you. What do you admire? What does that version need to hear? What do you wish they knew? This is a gentle but powerful reminder: you are always becoming, and you’ve already come so far.
