Complaining Too Much? 5 Questions to Ask Yourself & 5 Ways to Stop

Complaining is a completely normal part of human behavior.

For many of us, it’s a way to vent out our frustrations - or even a way to start to see real change in the world (as long as it’s followed by positive actions!). Yet, we all know (or have known) someone that complains a little too much.

One Thing You Avoid: Facing What You’ve Put Off

We all have that one thing we keep pushing to the side. Maybe it’s a task you’ve been meaning to finish, a conversation you’ve been meaning to have, or a decision that’s been lingering in the back of your mind. It’s a normal human reaction to want to avoid things that feel uncomfortable or overwhelming. But often, the longer we avoid them, the more space they take up in our minds and the more it affects our energy.

Acknowledging what you’ve been putting off can be a big relief. You don’t have to tackle everything on your to-do list all at once. But being honest with yourself about what’s been hanging around in your subconscious is the first step to ensure you start facing what you have been putting off.

Confronting even one small thing you’ve been avoiding helps build trust with yourself. It’s a reminder that you can handle hard or uncomfortable things, and that you don’t need to wait for the perfect moment to start (which will never come, because is there no perfect time!). When you take even the smallest step forward, you create momentum and build up your confidence.

Ask yourself: What’s one thing I’ve been avoiding lately? Make sure to write it down, and place it somewhere you can see it. Maybe on your refrigerator, in your car, or tape it to your bedside table. The more uncomfortable you feel seeing the note everyday, the more comfortable you will be with facing the things you tend to avoid.
