What is Kensho? The Zen Practice of Seeing Your True Nature

Do you ever feel like you just need your world shaken up a bit?

Sometimes, this can indicate you need some kind of realization or enlightenment in your life. Maybe things have been kind of dull and mundane, or you generally feel “stuck.”

Or perhaps you’ve recently undergone a big life change, or maybe you’ve been on your own personal development journey for quite some time.

In Buddhism, the first Zen experience of enlightenment is called “kensho.”

Kensho literally translates to “seeing nature.” In other words, it’s about seeing one’s true nature.

So, what does this mean exactly? And how can you obtain it?

Positively Uplifting Stories | June 16 2025

In these times of increasing polarization, it’s easy to fall into the trap of indifference. No matter how bleak things may appear, know that people still care.

There are individuals actively working to make life better for others. And acts of kindness save lives every day, everywhere.

Kindness can open hearts. A simple act of giving can spark a transformative process in someone’s life.

Let’s take a look at stories that are a testament to the power of generosity.

One Positive Action

Social Media: What is your digital mirror telling you?

We’re all guilty of doom scrolling through social media without thinking much about it. But our over consumption of social media often makes us too numb to reflect on the content we are seeing. The stuff you like, save, or keep coming back to isn’t random, its a ‘digital mirror’ showing what’s going on in your life, head and heart right now.

If your feed is all motivational quotes, maybe you're going through a slump and need some positivity in your life. If travel influencers are catching your eye, your inner explorer might be itching for an adventure. Even what you scroll past without a second thought tells you something about what matters to you (because your algorithm is telling you so!).

Once you notice these little patterns, you can reflect on the kind of content you’re seeing. You do not have to let the algorithm decide what you see. Start by cleaning up your feed and follow people or pages that make you feel good, motivated, or calm. Use social media as a space that helps you grow into your best self, not a doom-scrolling medium.

Take five minutes in your day to look through your recent social media activity. What you liked, saved, commented on, and the overall theme of the content on your feed. Based on that, start by following some accounts that support where you want to go. Look through hashtags that support your vision and find communities you resonate with. It may seem like a small step, but it can seriously shift your entire feed.
