Do You Need Some Tough Love? 7 Pointed Questions to Ask Yourself

Yes, it pays to approach things with care and kindness.

But… sometimes, what we really need is a good, old-fashioned kick in the pants.

Like when we procrastinate getting out of our bed in the morning and spend countless minutes scrolling our phones.

Silence Tolerance: Getting Comfy with the Quiet

You know that awkward moment when a conversation stops and there’s a moment of silence? Most of us immediately panic and scramble to fill the void with anything that comes to our mind. We've gotten so used to constant chatter and background noise in our everyday lives that silence feels uncomfortable.

If you're always rushing to fill the silence in conversations, you might be worried about being judged or feeling like you need to keep everyone entertained. And when you're alone, if you immediately grab your phone or turn on music, it could mean you're not totally comfortable with hearing your own thoughts.

When you work toward getting more comfortable with silence, you actually hear what you're really thinking instead of the surface-level stuff. Conversations get deeper because you're giving people space to say what they really want to say instead of rushing to the next topic.

Try letting three silences just exist somewhere in your day today. When there's a pause in conversation, count to five before jumping in. Sit quietly for a couple minutes without grabbing your phone or starting a new topic of conversation. You might be surprised by what comes up in your head when you finally give the quiet a chance to think, and you’ll be a more secure person because of it.
