"Wabi-sabi" is a Japanese aesthetic philosophy that encourages finding beauty in imperfection, impermanence, and the incomplete. It values authenticity, simplicity, and the natural cycle of growth and decay.
The term is derived from two concepts:
Wabi: This refers to the rustic simplicity, freshness, and quietness found in nature. It can also denote the beauty that comes with age and wear, suggesting an appreciation for the impermanent and the imperfect.

Sit in Silence for 10 Minutes
If silence or stillness makes you uncomfortable, at least know that a lot of people also feel the same way. In a world full of noise, silence can feel strange, like we should constantly be filling it with conversations or background noise. However, the deepest moments of self-reflection often come in silence or stillness.
When we sit in silence, we meet ourselves and our thoughts without distraction. The thoughts, emotions, and restlessness that silence makes us think or feel are part of the process of being more comfortable in the stillness.
This practice teaches emotional regulation. It helps you witness your thoughts without judgment and reminds you that you are not your inner chatter. Your thoughts might take you to a place or worry or stress, but it’s important to be able to navigate your subconscious mind without becoming overwhelmed.
Set a timer for 10 minutes. Sit in silence, without your phone or music. See where your mind and body take you. Are you relaxed? Nervous? Tense? Are your thoughts positive or anxious in nature? Take this information and work towards having more control in moments of silence. Remind yourself that being comfortable with stillness is a sign of resiliency and that you are on a path of growth.
