"What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger" - 4 Steps on the Path to Building Resilience

The phrase, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”, which is now cliché, was a saying used by German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche,

Ever since then, the phrase has been morphed and used to explain the unexpected growth of people, ideas, and things from chaos.

In fact, one famous work of our modern times – Antifragile – Things That Gain From Disorder, by Nassim Taleb – is an elaborate expansion on this.

As much as this saying has philosophical origins, and now sounds cliché, the meaning behind it -  holds is quite sturdy – in almost all areas of life.

One Positive Action

Start a Difficult Conversation

The conversations we avoid are often the ones that matter most, but it’s normal to dread them a little bit. Whether it’s expressing a need, setting a boundary, or offering an apology, honesty is a form of courage. These are hard (but necessary) conversations, that in turn will make you more confident.

Fear often makes us imagine the worst-case scenario, all the things that can go wrong when we intend to bring up something difficult that needs to be spoken about. But in reality, hard conversations often bring clarity, connection, and release. They allow relationships to evolve (or potentially end, unfortunately) in ways that help you grow.

Each time you voice your truth, you strengthen your emotional resilience. You give others the chance to meet you where you truly are, not where you pretend to be, and hear your truths. Having hard conversations lightens the emotional and mental load you carry, and makes you all the better for it.

Identify one conversation you've been avoiding. Take a moment to reflect on what you really want to express. Approach the person who you need to speak with, with openness and patience. Whether it’s a easy or hard conversation, choosing to engage with honesty is a step toward deeper trust, healing, and growth for everyone involved.
