Toxic Positivity 6 Ways You Can Deal With (and Avoid!) it
How often do you go through social media and come across comments such as...
- ‘Hang in there’
- ‘You simply need to leave the house’
- ‘Don’t give up’
- ‘Things could have been worse’...
...under a post where someone had shared a negative experience?

One Positive Action
Say Hello to Imperfection
Sometimes, the most revolutionary act of self-kindness is simply letting go of the illusion of perfection. We are nagged by the little voice inside our heads insisting that everything we do must be flawless. But what if today we give ourselves permission to be beautifully, wonderfully human, complete with missteps and harmless flaws? Not necessarily something big or important, just a small task done imperfectly.
Choose one small act where you normally over-polish your performance, maybe writing an email and tweaking it four times before you hit send. Today, write it once and simply send it. Or put on socks that don’t match. Or go to bed without doing the dishes left in the kitchen sink. By letting go, you affirm that life isn’t a perfection test, and it is okay to step away from the constant need to feel like something is perfect. When we embrace imperfection, we gift ourselves freedom. That freedom ripples outward, softening our stress and boosting our self-trust.
We start to learn that a slightly messy sock drawer or a casually sent message doesn’t diminish our worth or our effectiveness. Doing something imperfectly can even spark creativity and connection. Like your offbeat socks might elicit a compliment or your “not perfect” email might feel more human and real to its recipient. You begin to realize that life grows richer in the cracks where perfection doesn’t quite fit.
Today, pick one act of deliberate imperfection. Write that email with heart, not polish. Walk out in mismatched socks as a small, playful declaration: “I am human.” Leave a minor chore for tomorrow and feel the lightness of release. Celebrate that small, courageous choice. With each imperfect act, you’ll rediscover the joy, creativity, and kindness that lies just beyond the edge of perfect control.
