"What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger" - 4 Steps on the Path to Building Resilience

The phrase, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”, which is now cliché, was a saying used by German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche,

Ever since then, the phrase has been morphed and used to explain the unexpected growth of people, ideas, and things from chaos.

In fact, one famous work of our modern times – Antifragile – Things That Gain From Disorder, by Nassim Taleb – is an elaborate expansion on this.

As much as this saying has philosophical origins, and now sounds cliché, the meaning behind it -  holds is quite sturdy – in almost all areas of life.

For example:

  • If a plane crash occurs, engineers learn from the incident to build better planes.

  • If we work out, our muscles get stressed (and sore), but then they grow thicker and stronger by healing.

  • When we come up with an idea, and someone pokes holes at it (tearing it down), it enables us to refine it, or think about better ideas, hence making us wiser…

This Week’s Healthy Recipe

Sip on This Fibre-Rich Peanut Butter Flaxseed Smoothie | Mental Health Recipes

After hearing expert after expert chime in about how important fiber is, I decided to start tracking my fiber intake and incorporating more of it. I realized I wasn’t eating as much as I thought I was. And I realized that I really could be eating better than I was!

Only about 5% of Americans meet the recommended daily fiber intake, largely thanks to a highly processed diet. And this isn’t good news for your gut or your mental health. Fiber is essential for keeping your digestive system running smoothly, but its benefits go far beyond that.

It also helps regulate blood sugar levels, supports a healthy gut microbiome, and plays a surprisingly powerful role in mental health. A well-fed gut supports the production of mood-regulating neurotransmitters…

One Positive Action

Take A Cold Shower

Although it may sound extreme, stepping into the cold is one of the simplest ways to invite discomfort and build resilience. You don’t need to stay long. Just enough to feel the edge. Aside from cold showers having health benefits, it’s a way to physically experience some discomfort, and push past it.

Cold exposure jolts you out of your comfort zone. It's physical, immediate, and totally within your control. Your breath shortens, your body protests, and yet, you adapt. The temperature will become more manageable the longer you stay in the water.

The benefit of cold showers? You gain mental toughness. You practice staying calm under stress. There are even health benefits including boosting blood circulation, relieving muscle soreness and increased alertness. You can start your day with a win, knowing you did something challenging before most people even had a coffee.

If you are feeling brave, step into a cold shower today. If you are not ready for such a shock to the body right off the bat, try turning the water cold for 30 seconds at the end of your regular shower. Breathe through it. Embrace the discomfort, and let it remind you that discomfort doesn’t last forever.
