"Learning to Trust My Inner Voice Again"
For a long time, I didn’t trust myself to know what I needed… at least not fully. I checked my instincts against other people’s opinions, searched for reassurance before making decisions, and explained myself long past the point needed.
I told myself this was being thoughtful, but looking back, it was often a lack of trust disguised as consideration.
I don’t know when, but at some point, I learned that certainty was risky. That it was safer to ask, to poll the room, to wait for confirmation before moving forward. So I outsourced my decisions to friends, to experts, to articles, to the collective wisdom of everyone except myself.
And the strange thing is, even when I followed the advice I was given, I often felt unsettled afterward because it didn’t come from me.
This year, I’m noticing how often I already know the answer before I ask the question and the quiet hesitation before I override my choice. I’m payinf attention to the moment of clarity I talk myself out of because it feels too unproven.
Rebuilding trust with myself has been subtle. It looks like pausing before explaining a decision that feels right or just letting a “no” stand. Making choices based on how something feels in my body, not how it might be received.
I’m learning that my inner voice isn’t demanding; it doesn’t shout or rush. Most of the time, it speaks softly, in small nudges. When I ignore it, I feel a tightness, unease, a sense of misalignment.
Trusting myself doesn’t mean I’ll never doubt or reconsider. But it does mean I stop assuming I’m wrong by default. It means I treat my own perspective as worthy of consideration, even when it doesn’t come with external validation.
As the year begins, I’m asking a different kind of question—not what should I do? but what do I already know?
Coming home to yourself is about believing that you are capable of guiding your own life; that your instincts have been shaped by experience, reflection, and care.
You don’t need to explain every choice.
You don’t need permission to trust yourself.
You already know what you need.
The work now is learning to listen and letting that be enough.
