6 Ways to Help You Recover From Last Year’s Burnout & Achieve Your Resolutions

As the new year begins, most of us have a set of goals and accomplishments we wish to achieve throughout the year.

However, some of us are still haunted by the stress from the previous year. Due to the need to accomplish a lot before the year ends, pressure can build up, and consequently, we can experience some levels of burnout.

In an era where overworking and not getting sufficient rest is typically viewed as a success, we are likely to fall into that trap until we reach a breaking point.

Sadly, carrying this burnout into the new year can be detrimental, getting in the way of us achieving the goals we have set for ourselves. Therefore, it is essential to address burnout before it is too late.

But, first things first:

What is Burnout?

Burnout refers to a state of chronic physical and emotional exhaustion that can also result in stress.

It is associated with feeling overwhelmed, emotionally and physically drained and having difficulties meeting deadlines and commitments

7 Reasons to Bring Shadow Work into Your Mental Health Routine in 2026

Shadow work is a practice that helps us to understand and confront the deeply hidden parts of ourselves that we can’t see or don’t want to accept or acknowledge.

The shadow is the unconscious part of the psyche.

Let's take a look at shadow work - what it is, how to do it and seven reasons it could be a good idea to incorporate it into your mental health practice.

How to Do Shadow Work

An example of how someone can do shadow work is by setting aside time for self-reflection.

This could be done by spending a few moments at the beginning and end of each day to reflect on what has happened and how you felt about it…

Come Home to Yourself

"Coming Home at a Slower Pace"

January arrives with a strange kind of pressure. It’s as if the calendar flips and we’re supposed to be ready somehow; focused and full of plans. Rest seems to have ended at midnight on December 31st and now it’s time to move.

If I’m honest, I don’t arrive in January feeling renewed. I arrive full of half-processed moments, lingering emotions, and a body that hasn’t quite caught up yet. And for years, I treated that like a problem to solve instead of a signal to listen to.

I used to think the right way to start a new year was with momentum, lists, goals, or immediate improvement. I rushed myself forward before I’d even landed, trying to outrun the discomfort of slowing down.

This year, I’m doing something different.

I’m letting January be an arrival, not a launch.

Coming home to yourself happens when you allow yourself to notice where you actually are. Take notice of how tired you feel, what still needs settling, and what you carried out of the last year that you haven’t set down yet.

Slowing the pace means refusing to pretend you’re somewhere you’re not. Let your nervous system catch up to your life and trust that clarity comes more easily when you’re not forcing movement.

I don’t need to start strong to start honestly. I don’t need a plan fully formed. I just need space to breathe without turning that pause into something I feel guilty about.

So for now, I’m choosing smaller days, quieter mornings and fewer decisions made out of urgency. I’m letting myself ease back into routines instead of demanding immediate discipline. I’m paying attention to what feels grounding instead of what looks impressive.

There will be time for intention-setting and action, but right now, there is value in moving slowly enough to feel yourself again.

If this season feels heavier than expected, you’re not doing it wrong. If you’re not ready to declare who you’ll be this year, that’s okay. You’re allowed to arrive gently.

Coming home to yourself doesn’t require transformation, but rather, it requires honesty. It starts by letting your pace match your reality.

January doesn’t have to be loud to be meaningful.

Sometimes the most powerful way to begin is quietly, with care.

This month isn’t about becoming someone new.

It’s about returning to yourself, one slow step at a time.
