Simple, 5-Minute Emotional Intelligence Micro-Practices for Your Daily Commute

Most of us aren’t using our commute for anything particularly productive.

Maybe you’re scrolling through your phone, zoning out to a podcast, or mentally rehearsing that awkward conversation you’ve been avoiding. And hey, no judgment. Commutes can feel like dead time, something to just get through before the real day begins.

But what if those 20, 30, or 45 minutes could actually change how you show up in the world?

Emotional intelligence—the ability to understand and manage your own emotions while also tuning into the emotions of others—is one of the most valuable skills you can develop. It affects your relationships, your career, your stress levels, and, well, your overall quality of life.

Our world is filled with beautiful examples of people looking out for one another.

Every week, we bring you heartwarming stories about people’s generosity, compassion, and desire to help others, which is what the world needs more of.

"When you are kind to others, it not only changes you, it changes the world." - Harold Kushner

  • Heroic students take quick action to save a bus driver in medical distress

  • A group of teenagers performs acts of kindness for shoppers

  • A 9-year-old brings smiles to young patients

  • A teen and a therapy dog build a beautiful friendship

One Positive Action

Joy Tracker

When you think about "purpose," it can feel overwhelming, but purpose typically hides in the everyday moments that make you feel energized and alive. Have you ever noticed how some activities leave you completely drained while others seem to refill your tank? Your body and mind give you clues about what brings you fulfillment, but we usually rush past them without paying attention.

Today, I want you to pay attention to your day and pick out just one activity that sparked energy or a sense of flow. It could be laughing with a friend, solving a problem at work, cooking dinner, or taking a quiet walk. That burst of energy you feel when you're helping someone, the way time disappears when you're working on something creative, or how recharged you feel after a meaningful conversation; these moments are breadcrumbs leading you toward your purpose.

When you start noticing these little sparks over time, they will point toward your deeper sense of purpose. At the end of today, jot down one activity that made you feel most alive. Keep a running list for a week and see what themes begin to appear. Your joy will lead you in the direction of your true purpose.
