Why It’s Okay Not To Be Okay: You Shouldn't Hide Your Feelings

Most times we’re okay, or generally comfortable, but sometimes we’re not.

Sometimes it feels like life threw a brick at you and it landed between your eyes. Other times it is subtler – like having a “D” whilst the person next to you had an “A”, or going to a parking lot only to discover that the only space left was between a Mercedes and a Porsche, while you own a barely functional pickup truck.

But it could get worse.

Often, when we turn to someone to tell them how we feel, or don't present a mask of happiness, we get hammered with comments like “stay positive,” and other affirmations and slights which goes a long way toward making our feelings invalidated

You Need a Mental Vacation: 7 Fast Ways to Refresh

Our world continues to move faster and faster.

But despite all the modern improvements that were supposed to make our lives easier, we still seem to be getting more stressed, overwhelmed and anxious.

True, technology has made a lot of difficult jobs easier, and has created more time; but what have we done with the time it afforded us?

We added more work to it.

The excuse many of us tell ourselves is that we have to work harder so we can afford a vacation before we can get away from all the work.

We complain of not having the money nor time for a vacation, so we won’t hit pause. And so the cycle continues.

But vacations don’t always have to cost a fortune, nor do they have to take a lot of time.

You can take a mental vacation for free, and be in and out of it in just 15 minutes

Come Home to Yourself

"Choosing Where My Energy Actually Belongs"

I used to think exhaustion was just part of being a good person. If I felt drained at the end of the day, it meant I’d shown up, listened, helped or that I’d been available. Being tired became proof that I was doing life correctly.

I didn’t realize was how much of my energy was leaking out in places that never returned it.

I told myself this was just what happened as a caring person; that being emotionally generous meant always being reachable, always listening, always holding space. Eventually, I started to notice the imbalance in how often I left interactions feeling heavy and how rarely I felt restored by the effort I was putting in.

Energy doesn’t announce when it’s being overdrawn. It just fades.

This year, I’m paying closer attention to where mine goes.

I’m noticing which interactions leave me grounded and which leave me unsettled; which commitments feel aligned and which feel obligatory; which relationships allow me to show up as myself, and which require constant emotional translation.

Protecting your energy is an act of care, both for yourself and for the people you choose to stay connected to.

When I give energy from a depleted place, it turns into resentment. When I give it intentionally, it stays generous.

Not every situation needs my emotional labor, my intervention, or my energy. Simply put, not everything is my job. Some things belong to other people to carry, process, and resolve. Trusting that has been uncomfortable for a people-pleaser like myself, but freeing each time I stand my ground.

Coming home to yourself sometimes means gathering your energy back from places where it was never meant to live. It means choosing where you pour from with intention, instead of obligation.

As the year unfolds, I’m asking myself a softer question than I used to:

What deserves my energy, and what doesn’t?

That question alone has already started changing my life.
