Addicted to Approval? Embracing Self-Love & Taking Back Your Power

Do you catch yourself craving someone else’s approval to feel good about yourself?

Maybe it’s a partner, a friend, or even a colleague. Their disapproval feels like rejection, leaving you questioning your worth. If that resonates, you’re not alone - it’s a cycle many of us find ourselves in.

But constantly seeking external validation isn’t just exhausting; it’s also a sign that you may be neglecting the most important relationship of all - the one you have with yourself.

For years, I lived in this approval-seeking trap, allowing my happiness to depend on others’ validation…

One Positive Action

Empowerment Repetition

Sometimes, you need to be your own hype person. Picking an empowering phrase, something like "I am strong" or "I can handle this," and saying it to yourself, out loud or in your head, can shift the way you think. It won’t solve everything in five seconds, but it’s a small way to interrupt the noise of self-doubt and stress.

The key is repetition. Say it five times, slowly, like you’re letting the words sink in. “I am capable.” Pause. “I am capable.” Again. You’re not forcing yourself to believe it right away, you’re planting the idea, watering it a little, and giving it a chance to grow. And yeah, it might feel awkward or even a bit forced at first. That’s okay. You’re just talking to yourself in a way that feels a little kinder.

If you’re stuck on what to say, think about what you need to hear right now. Stressed? “I choose calm.” Overwhelmed? “One step at a time.” Burned out? “Rest is okay.” These aren’t just empty words, they’re reminders, a way to nudge your brain out of the spiral and into something more constructive. It’s a small act of reclaiming control when things feel messy.

Sure, this isn’t going to fix everything overnight, but it’s a start. Repeating those words is like anchoring yourself in the middle of the chaos. It’s a reminder that even when things feel shaky, you can still choose how you show up for yourself. And honestly, that’s pretty empowering.
