You head to work in the dark and by the time you get home, it's dark again. This can take a huge toll on your mental health! This is where Seasonal Affective Disorder (Or the winter blues) begins to affect a lot of us - and sometimes we don't even notice it creeping up on us.

One Positive Action

Try a “Breathing Square”:

The next time you’re starting to feel like it’s all just becoming a bit much, a breathing square is a simple, structured way to center yourself. The idea is straightforward: imagine a square. As you inhale, visualize moving along one side of the square for four counts. Hold your breath for four counts as you trace the next side. Exhale for four counts along the third side, and hold again for four counts to complete the square. You can even trace it in the air with your finger or picture it in your mind, it’s all about anchoring your focus.

The beauty of this technique lies in its simplicity and effectiveness. When you’re caught up in stress or overstimulation, the act of focusing on your breath and the rhythm of the counts gives your mind something concrete to hold onto. That rhythmic pattern signals your nervous system to calm down, slowing your heart rate and pulling you out of fight-or-flight mode. It’s like giving your body and mind permission to step off the rollercoaster for a minute.

It’s not just for moments of panic or stress, either. You can use this exercise as a quick reset during a busy day, a way to ground yourself before tackling something challenging, or even as a wind-down ritual before bed. It’s adaptable, doesn’t require any tools, and only takes a few seconds. You can do it anywhere, sitting at your desk, standing in line, or lying in bed. All you need is a few moments to focus on your breath.

What makes the breathing square so powerful is how it combines movement (even if it’s imaginary) with controlled breathing. That visualization of the square adds another layer to the practice, gently keeping your mind from wandering while you breathe. It’s a simple, quiet way to take control of your own well-being, one breath at a time.
