How to Make New Friends After Cutting Out the Toxic People
American entrepreneur Jim Rohn has said,
“You are the sum of who you surround yourself with.”
In other words… If you’re hanging out with people you don’t strive to be or admire you in one way or another, you might be hanging out with the wrong crowd. And you might even be becoming someone who you don’t want to be.
Maybe recently, you came to this realization. All the red flags were there. The group of friends you surrounded yourself with is toxic. So, you cut them out. But… This inevitably left a huge gaping hole in your social circle…

Text an Old Friend
We all have that one friend we haven’t spoken to in ages, the one who pops into your mind every so often, but life always gets in the way of reaching out. Maybe you’re worried it’ll be awkward or that too much time has passed. But just maybe, that message you’re hesitating to send might be exactly what they need to see today. A simple “Hey, you crossed my mind, how are you doing?” can go a long way.
There’s something grounding about reconnecting with someone who knew you in a different chapter of your life. You don’t need to jump back into daily texts or reviving old inside jokes (though that might happen, and it’s great if it does). It’s more about reminding each other that the connection is still there, even if you don’t talk every day, or every year.
And let’s be real: life gets messy and busy for all of us. Chances are, they’ll be happy you reached out, even if it’s been a while. You’re not intruding or digging up the past; you’re just reminding them that they’re not forgotten. Sometimes, a short conversation can leave both of you feeling a little lighter, a little more grounded, and a lot more human.
So, pick up your phone and send that text. It doesn’t have to be perfect or overly thoughtful, just genuine. You never know where that small nudge might lead. At the very least, you’ve taken a moment to acknowledge someone who mattered to you, and that’s never wasted.
