Is Overgeneralization Twisting Your Mindset? How to Know for Sure

Have you ever made a mountain out of a molehill? Of course you have - and you’re not alone.

This is generally referred to as overgeneralization, a cognitive distortion that occurs when we make sweeping generalizations based on limited or isolated experiences. It involves taking one instance or a few instances and applying it to an entire group or situation.

For example, if you have a really bad experience with someone from, say, Colorado, you might overgeneralize and assume that everyone from Colorado is that way…

One Positive Action

Reprogram a limiting belief:

Your beliefs shape your reality. Every result you have, or don’t have, comes from the beliefs running in the background of your mind. The problem is, most people don’t realize they’re operating on outdated, limiting beliefs that keep them stuck. If you believe you’re “not smart enough,” “bad with money,” or “destined to struggle,” your brain will work to prove those beliefs true. But here’s the good news: you can reprogram those patterns.

Start by identifying one belief that’s holding you back. Maybe it’s “I’ll never be successful” or “I’m not disciplined enough.” Now, challenge it. Is that belief fact, or just something you’ve reinforced over time? Look for evidence to the contrary: times you’ve succeeded, learned quickly, or shown resilience. The brain is malleable, and when you question a limiting belief, you weaken its grip.

Next, replace that belief with one that empowers you. Instead of “I’m not good with money,” shift to “I am learning to manage my finances with confidence.” Instead of “I can’t stick to habits,” try “I am becoming the type of person who follows through.” Repetition is key. Say it, write it, feel it. Your brain doesn’t know the difference between real and imagined; it simply accepts what you feed it. Do this daily, and over time, your subconscious will align with your new reality, creating the success, confidence, and freedom you’re capable of.
