Why We Lose Our Patience and How to Take It Back

We all have those moments when our patience packs its bags and sprints straight out the door.

Maybe it’s the person in front of you who decides to count out $4.83 in loose change.

Maybe it’s the spinning Wi-Fi wheel mocking you while you try to play a video.

Or maybe it’s you, standing in your kitchen, losing your cool because the coffee machine is taking a whole 15 extra seconds.

Modern life makes patience feel like an endangered species. We’re constantly juggling, scrolling, reacting, and trying to keep up with a world that doesn’t stop moving…

This Week’s Uplifting Stories

Positively Uplifting Stories | December 22 2025

When our actions come from a place of love and compassion, even the most ordinary, everyday interactions can make a profound difference.

A single moment of patience and understanding can ease the burden of someone struggling in silence and inspire them to keep going.

No matter what, choose compassion, again and again.

Here are a few stories that show how our actions can help create a kinder, more connected world.

  • An organization offers a safe place for vulnerable youth

  • A group of women is leading a movement to reduce food waste

  • A woman receives a surprise from Secret Santa

  • A homeless woman inspires others with her generosity

One Positive Action

Practice Waiting Without Filling the Space

Waiting has quietly become something we try to escape. The moment there is a pause, a delay, or even a few empty seconds, we reach for something to fill it. We treat waiting like wasted time instead of a normal part of life, but over time, that constant filling trains the brain to feel restless any time things slow down.

Patience starts by learning how to rest in the small delays. These are the moments most of us rush through or distract ourselves from without realizing it. When you never allow yourself to wait, your nervous system stays in a constant state of urgency.

Choosing to wait without filling the space is a way to teach your body that nothing bad is happening just because nothing is happening. We can let the moment breathe at its own pace, without forcing stillness or making waiting some big self improvement exercise. When you allow yourself to wait, even briefly, your system slows on its own. You start to feel less rushed and less reactive because you are no longer treating every pause as a problem.

Today, choose one moment to wait without filling the space. Stand in line without scrolling, sit in your car for a minute before going inside and let a pause exist without reaching for stimulation. Notice the urge to fill the time and let it pass. Nothing needs to happen. This small act of waiting is a quiet way to rebuild patience where it actually begins.
