Perhaps you started the year with big dreams, a long list of goals, and all the motivation in the world. But somewhere along the way, that fire dimmed.

The excitement faded.

And now?

You’re exhausted just thinking about your to-do list.

Mental Subtraction

Life fills up slowly, and after a while, it becomes difficult to tell what genuinely matters and what’s simply habit.

A helpful way to cut through the noise is a technique called mental subtraction. Instead of asking what you should add to feel better, ask what could be removed.

Choose one stressor, expectation, or commitment you’ve been carrying by default. Pause and imagine your life without it. Notice what shifts inside you. Relief? Space? Energy?

If imagining life without it feels lighter, that’s information. It does not mean you must eliminate it immediately, just that the weight you are carrying needs to be reconsidered.

Pick one obligation or expectation that feels heavy and spend two minutes imagining your day without it. If the imagined version of your life feels noticeably better, explore what reducing, delegating, or releasing it might look like. The clarity alone is often the first step toward change.
