7 Important Reasons to Bring Shadow Work into Your Mental Health Routine This Year

Shadow work is a practice that helps us to understand and confront our own shadow self, which is the hidden parts of ourselves that we can’t see or don’t want to accept or acknowledge.

The shadow is the unconscious part of the psyche.

Let's take a look at shadow work - what it is, how to do it and seven reasons it could be a good idea to incorporate it into your mental health practice.

How to Do Shadow Work

This Week’s Uplifting Stories

Positively Uplifting Stories | December 30, 2024

Despite all the hardships we experience, we have the ability to find joy and light again.

Acknowledge your resiliency. You are stronger than you think!

Through collective action, we can challenge perceptions, maintain hope, and create positive change in the world.

Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek. - Barack Obama

This week we bring you stories that show the power of collective action…

One Positive Action

Unplug for an hour

The holidays are winding down, and let’s be honest, it’s been a lot. The chaos of wrapping paper explosions, endless group texts, and notifications pinging every five seconds, it’s like your phone has been holding you hostage. So, set it aside. Just for an hour. Let your brain breathe for a second without the constant hum of screens demanding your attention.

Instead of scrolling, try something tech-free. Pick up a book you meant to start ages ago, doodle on a napkin, or just sit by the window and watch the world do its thing. There’s something grounding about staring at nothing in particular, trees swaying, a squirrel darting around, your neighbor trying to wrestle their trash can lid. It’s about letting your mind wander, like it’s been waiting for permission to step off the hamster wheel.

The holidays can leave you overstimulated, and that’s normal. Taking an hour to unplug doesn’t mean you’re ignoring the world; it means you’re giving yourself a breather. It’s a small way to recalibrate before diving into whatever’s next. And if the idea of sitting still makes you twitchy, that’s okay too. Try something with your hands, cook, fold laundry, build a house of cards, whatever keeps you grounded.

When you come back to your phone, it’ll still be there, waiting with all its pings and messages. But you’ll feel a little more centered, a little more you. And honestly, isn’t that worth an hour?
