5 Life Changing Japanese Philosophies You Need to Try

Whenever I talk to people about philosophies and principles I become fascinated.

There are endless sources of wisdom out there and lately, many Japanese views are at the top of my interest. Having read a bit about them, and as you can probably guess, there is a lot of material to cover.

It would take more than a lifetime to know all that is there to know about Japanese philosophies. However, a few have stood out to me:

One Positive Action

Just…. do NOTHING.

Set a timer for one minute and just... stop. No scrolling, no fidgeting, no planning your next move. Sit down, close your eyes if you want, and let the world do its thing without you for 60 seconds. It’s not about meditating or finding some deep, enlightened state. It’s just a pause. A moment where you let your brain catch its breath.

At first, it’ll probably feel awkward. Your mind will start making lists or reminding you about that email you haven’t answered. That’s fine, let it chatter away. The goal isn’t to clear your mind; it’s to give it space to just be, without constantly pushing it to do something. You might be surprised how long a minute feels when you’re not cramming it with tasks.

And yeah, one minute isn’t going to fix everything, but that’s not the point. It’s about showing yourself that you can take a moment, even in the busiest of days, to just exist. Sometimes it’s enough to pause and remind yourself that life doesn’t have to be a constant race.

When the timer goes off, don’t overthink it. Just get up and carry on. But maybe carry a little less of whatever was weighing you down before you sat still. It’s a tiny act of defiance against all the noise, and sometimes, that’s all you need.
