The Surprising Mental Benefits of Helper's High: Why it Feels So Good to Give

German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche once said,

“To live is to suffer, to survive is to find some meaning in the suffering.”

For a fulfilling life, purpose and meaning is undeniably essential. Yet, in today’s modern world, so many of us struggle to find true meaning in our lives, leading to increasing rates of anxiety, depression, and other mental illnesses.

However, many other people have also derived meaning from helping others. Maybe you’ve noticed this too! After volunteering, you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. After helping your friend move, you feel good.

This little phenomenon is known as the “Helper’s High.” And surprisingly it can actually lead to a longer life (we aren’t kidding!).

Think a Meditation Retreat Can’t Help You? 5 Benefits You May Not Know About

Many people might think that a meditation retreat is sitting on top of a mountain alone, waiting for spiritual enlightenment.

Or, they may think it’s a bunch of “woo-woo” people dressed in robes or funky clothes.

While some meditation retreats may occur in the mountains, and you may find people dressed in various styles, there is so much more to meditation retreats these days.

Retreats geared toward meditation occur all over the world. From small retreat centers in nature to large retreat settings in a big city, many people feel led to retreat from the world for a time to get quiet and go within.

News Diet

Have you ever noticed how you can wake up feeling pretty good, and then fifteen minutes of scrolling later, you're convinced the world is ending? That there are so many terrible things in the world happening, we can barely keep count? We've normalized this constant drip of negativity as "staying informed," but there's a difference between being aware and being overwhelmed. Your mental state shouldn't be held hostage by every crisis update and outrage cycle. Constantly consuming news is unfortunately one of the most draining things we can do to ourselves.

A news diet day is making an effort to avoid news websites, social media feeds, negative podcasts, and even those group chats sharing the latest disaster. Instead of mindlessly reaching for your phone to check what's happening in the world, you redirect that impulse toward something that actually serves your well-being. Turn off your cell phone, mute your notifications, do anything you have to do to find a way to get away from the news-overload.

When you step away from the news cycle for just one day, you'll be amazed at how much mental bandwidth opens up. Without that constant background hum of anxiety-inducing information, your mind becomes quieter and more focused. You start noticing good things happening right around you and remember that you can care about the world without consuming every piece of negative content about it. It is impossible to forget the news that we find ourselves thinking about, or feeling emotionally impacted by, but doing our best to protect some of our energy from it will make a difference.

Pick a day this week and commit to a full news diet. Delete news apps temporarily, log out of social media, mute the notifications, and have a plan for what you'll do with that freed-up time and mental energy. Maybe read that novel, take a long walk, call someone who makes you laugh, or try that recipe you bookmarked. The goal is to remember what it feels like when your mind isn't constantly processing the issues that are going on in our world.
