Fight, Flight or Freeze Response: Which is Your Default in an Argument?

Fight, flight or freeze - have you heard this before? Here's an example:

One day, while happily walking in nature, I turned the corner on the trail and my eyes spotted a huge snake.

Instantly, I froze. In just a few seconds, these kinds of thoughts went through my head:

  • OMG, I’m going to die.

  • I hope it’s not venomous.

  • Do I run? Or just stay frozen?

  • Please snake, just slither away already.

  • Please, God, I don’t want to go out this way!

On the physical side, my breathing and heart rate slowed down. I felt numb and time stopped. As soon as I saw that snake, my body automatically went into a stress (survival) response called “fight-flight-freeze”. That’s the autonomic nervous system doing its instinctual thing to protect me from perceived threats.

In those few moments after I saw the snake, my brain went…

6 Beginner Meditation Retreats You Definitely Want to Try

Many practices that have stood the test of time have proven to offer real, lasting benefits - including meditation.

Modern research demonstrates that this ancient practice can:

  • reduce stress

  • improve focus

  • boost mood

  • support physical health

It’s no wonder it’s become so popular in recent years, with new apps and teachers making it easier than ever to learn and practice from anywhere.

However, starting any new habit can be a tough hurdle to overcome. But immersion is arguably one of the best ways to break through this barrier. This is where meditation retreats can offer a bridge to building a daily meditation habit.

After all, Buddha once said,

So, what meditation retreat is ideal for beginners? Inevitably, you probably want one that takes place on the…

One Positive Action

Kindness Action

There's something quietly powerful about kindness, especially when no one knows it came from you. We're used to kindness being transactional; do something nice, get thanked in return. But when you take yourself out of the equation, the act becomes purely about giving, with no strings attached. It's a reminder that good energy doesn't always need recognition to matter.

An anonymous act of kindness can be as simple as leaving a sticky note with an encouraging message in a public space, paying for the next person's coffee, or dropping a kind text without signing your name. It doesn't have to be grand; in fact, the smaller and simpler, the better. What matters is the intention to brighten someone else's day without expecting anything back.

The benefit here works both ways. First, you're putting more light into the world, which has a ripple effect far beyond what you'll ever see. Second, you're protecting your own energy by shifting focus away from stress and back toward generosity. That simple shift creates a sense of ease and positivity within you. It's hard to stay stuck in negativity when you know you've quietly made someone else's load a little lighter.

Today, do one anonymous act of kindness. It might be holding a door, leaving change at a vending machine, or sending flowers without a name attached. Whatever you choose, let it be your reminder that protecting your energy doesn't always mean pulling inward, it can also mean shining outward.
