4 Neuroscience-Backed Studying Tips to Improve Your Learning Skills

Learning, studying for exams, or studying, in general, is not only about memorizing and retaining information.

You also don't have to be in school to be learning or studying something! Many people take on new languages, workshops, challenging booklists, or simply want to immerse themselves in new and interesting subjects such as history, yoga, psychology, marketing, starting a website, etc.

To become a better learner, we have to understand how our brain works. Learning what happens inside our brain during active learning can help overcome many obstacles. With that said, here are some neuroscience-based study tips that can help you become a more effective and confident learner.

4 Ways to Improve Your Learning Skills

1. Divide the task of learning into smaller chunks

One of the most brilliant discoveries.

Sure, You Care For Others, But How Well Do You Take Care Of Yourself?

Are you taking care of yourself?

Are you sure?

Many people tend to take care of others and neglect taking time to care for themselves on a regular basis. You might think you are doing this, but take some time to really think about it.

  • When is the last time you took a whole day to yourself?

  • Did an activity of your choosing?

  • Sunk into a hot bubble bath?

  • Hung out in the garage tinkering with something all day long?

Your idea of self-care is important. If you want to avoid burnout or just plain cranky moods, keep your mental, physical, and spiritual aspects in mind each day and take time to invest in yourself.

6 Easy Ways You Can Practice Self-Care on a Regular Basis

1. Early Morning “You” Time

One Positive Action

Conversation Energy Management

We can all understand the way the mood starts to dip in conversation when someone starts complaining, gossiping, or turns a conversation into a vent session. We all need to share frustrations sometimes, in fact, it can be healthy to do so and express those feelings to those close with us. But oftentimes, we end up in these conversations and walk away feeling drained or heavy. When these moments come up, I always find myself asking: Could I have led that conversation somewhere better?

Learning Conversation Energy Management helped me shift away from this pattern of draining conversations, and instead be able to fill my interactions (no matter who they’re with) with joy and intention. Today, pick one conversation and pay attention to the tone. If it starts leaning negative or gossipy, gently guide it in a different direction. You don’t have to shut anyone down or pretend everything’s perfect but instead, ask a question that makes the conversation solution-focused, share something encouraging, or shift to a topic that’s more uplifting.

When you do this, you are able to protect your own energy and influencing the energy of everyone involved. People will start to notice and appreciate the way they feel when they leave conversations you’re apart of because of your positive attitude. Over time, this practice also makes you more aware of how much impact you have on the emotional tone in your relationships, and that’s a powerful thing to carry in life.

So try this today: In one conversation, pay attention to when things start to turn negative and practice guiding it toward something better. That might mean asking, “So what’s going well with that project?” instead of digging deeper into complaints, or sharing a personal win to shift the mood. Notice how it feels to take the lead, and how you feel walking away on a positive note.
