Your Burnout Self-Care Routine: 5 Small Steps to Get You Back

Burnout is a beast, isn’t it?

You don’t just wake up one day and say, “Oh, I’m burned out!”

It creeps up on you slowly—until one day, you feel like you’re stuck in quicksand and can’t move. Maybe you're overwhelmed, mentally drained, or just emotionally tapped out. It’s not a great place to be, but here’s the good news: you can work your way out of it, even if you’re not sure where to start.

The key is to start small.

You’re not expected to fix everything at once! In fact, the first step is just taking care of your basic needs.

Let’s break this down into phases so you can gently find your way back to feeling like yourself again

This Week’s Uplifting Stories

Positively Uplifting Stories | April 6 2026

Giving back to your community isn’t just about helping others; it can be a life-changing experience for you as well.

By opening yourself to different perspectives and to people’s stories of resilience and hope, you begin to see life differently. You grow more empathetic, more aware, and discover a deeper sense of purpose within yourself.

Allow yourself to really tune into the fulfilling feeling of giving.

Here are a few stories of people uplifting others all around the world.

  • A community promotes an inclusive culture

  • A dog finds a forever home at a nursing home

  • An entrepreneur empowers women in rural communities

  • A couple’s foster care journey inspires others

One Positive Action

Stop Punishing Yourself

You have already lived through it. The mistake, the decision, the version of you that handled something poorly. It happened, and it ended. Yet your mind keeps returning to it, adding commentary, assigning blame, and replaying it as if it still needs to be settled.

Holding yourself accountable is useful but punishing yourself is not. At some point, the lesson has already been learned. Continuing to revisit the moment does not make you better; it keeps you tied to something that no longer exists in real time.

You are not the same person who made that decision. You have more awareness now. That is why you see it differently. Growth changes your perspective, but it should not trap you in constant correction.

There is a difference between remembering and carrying. Remembering allows you to move forward with clarity and carrying keeps the weight attached to you long after it should have been set down.

Notice one past mistake you keep revisiting. Write one sentence that acknowledges what you learned from it. Then write a second sentence that says, “I am not carrying this forward.” Read both once, then close it. Let the lesson stay, let the weight go and free yourself.
