6 Ways to Improve Focus and Take it to the Next Level

Written by: The DailyMotivation Team (Mostly Sarah)

Over the last 23 years or so, our attention spans have dropped from 2 and a half minutes to just 47 seconds.

Since 2003, Dr. Gloria Mark's team at the University of California, Irvine has been measuring people's attention spans when on a screen - and we have become steadily more distracted.

The idea behind focus has drifted so much in the 21st century. With endless distractions around us, it’s really hard to focus on just one thing.

So where do we start building up our resistance again?

There was a time when I couldn’t concentrate on my work for more than 10 minutes. I often found myself doing anything but what I was supposed to be doing - checking my Instagram, sending out texts, playing Candy Crush.

But I’ve found a few simple things that have massively helped me towards mastering the art of focus, and I wanted to share them in case they can help you to improve yours…

10 Helpful Things You Can Do Immediately to Get Through a Bad Day

Written by: Dominica

Every single one of us will bump up against a bad day here and there.

Maybe you got up on the wrong side of the bed and can shake it off once you get into your routine.

Maybe it's from a harsh encounter with someone at work, an ill-worded text that sets you off, or just feeling like not one single thing has gone your way.

Maybe you'll carry it with you all day as an annoying low hum in the background.

We ALL have those days. And sometimes, that's all that it is - a stinky day you can get through and move past. It's okay to have a crummy day, moan and groan about it, and let it pass on its own.

But bad days can also point to something bigger you may be carrying around, and it's important to reflect on why you keep having similar experiences…

One Positive Action

Start the Day Without Input

The first minutes of your day tend to set the direction for everything that follows. If you reach for your phone immediately, your attention is pulled outward before you have had a chance to settle. Messages, updates, and information arrive before you have even checked in with yourself.

That early input has an effect.

Instead of starting from a steady place, your mind shifts into response mode. You begin thinking about what is urgent, what needs attention, or what someone else has placed in front of you. From that point on, your focus is already divided.

Before taking anything in, give yourself a short window without input. No phone, no messages, and no outside information. Let your mind wake up on its own. Allow your thoughts to come in without direction, rather than reacting to something external. It does not need to be structured or productive.

The purpose is to create a brief space where your attention remains your own. Even a few minutes is enough to establish a sense of steadiness before the day begins to make demands.

Spend the first ten minutes of your day without your phone or any outside input. Let that time remain quiet and undirected. When it ends, move into your day with your attention intact.
