We’ve all noticed this.

5 Proactive Ways to Protect Your Mental Health Around Toxic People
We've all dealt with toxic people at some time or another.
Maybe it's that co-worker who always seems to spread negative comments about people's ideas, what they're wearing, how your manager handled something, or even complaining or making light of their own work.
Or perhaps you have a family member who is always trying to stir up drama, is openly inappropriate or disrespectful to others, and actively tries to pit people against each other, or just plain make everyone (Or one targeted person) feel bad about themselves.
That kind of attitude and behavior tends to poison the environment after a time, especially if they are pulling in other who can't or won't stand up to them…
One Positive Action
Reframe an obstacle:
When you’re right in the thick of a challenge, it’s hard to see anything but the mess in front of you. That’s normal. Hard things feel hard because they are. Our first instinct is usually to push it away, fix it fast, or just wish it wasn’t happening at all. But sometimes, sitting with the discomfort, not rushing to escape it, can reveal something we’d miss if we were too quick to move past it.
Every obstacle, whether we like it or not, has the potential to teach us something about ourselves. It might be patience, resilience, setting better boundaries, or learning to ask for help when we’d rather muscle through it alone. It doesn’t mean you have to be grateful for the hard thing. Let’s be clear about that. You don’t have to love the struggle to learn from it. What matters is the willingness to ask, “What is this experience pulling out of me? What strength is it forcing me to practice?”
That shift in perspective won’t erase the challenge, but it will change your relationship with it. Instead of feeling like the situation is just happening to you, you start to see how you’re actively engaging with it. It becomes less of a wall and more of a mirror, reflecting back the parts of you that are still growing. That recognition doesn’t solve everything, but it can soften the sharp edges of struggle just enough to help you keep moving forward.
So here’s your action: take one challenge you’re facing right now, doesn’t matter how big or small, and write it down at the top of a page. Then underneath, ask yourself: What is this teaching me? What skill, mindset, or strength is this forcing me to practice? Write out whatever comes up, no matter how rough or incomplete it feels. You might be surprised by what you find when you stop fighting the obstacle long enough to listen to it.
