Feeling Overwhelmed? Here Are 6 Tips You Can Use to Declutter Your Mind

Do you often feel overwhelmed and unable to focus on any one thing?

If yes, that could mean that your mind is cluttered and has a lot of brain ‘tabs’ open and you might need to close some of them down. The question is ‘How?’

From too much social media to trying to multitask to holding on to old issues from our past, adding to our mind clutter is not hard. But how do we start sweeping it out so we can feel less overwhelmed?

“Clutter is not just physical stuff. It’s old ideas, toxic relationships and bad habits. It’s anything that does not support your better self.” — Eleanor Brown

One Positive Action

Sort what you CAN control:

When life feels overwhelming, it’s usually because everything starts to pile up at once. Worries, responsibilities, expectations, both the ones others place on us and the ones we place on ourselves. It can feel like you’re carrying a weight you can’t put down, and the more you try to juggle it all, the heavier it seems. In these moments, our minds spin in every direction, and it becomes nearly impossible to tell what’s worth our energy and what’s just noise.

One of the kindest things you can do for yourself is to step back and get some perspective. Not everything you’re carrying is yours to fix or control. That’s a hard truth, but also a liberating one. When you give yourself permission to separate what’s in your hands from what’s outside of them, you create space to breathe again. You stop exhausting yourself over things that were never yours to carry in the first place.

There’s strength in focusing your effort where it actually counts. When you pour your energy into what you can control, your choices, your reactions, your next step, you start to feel a little lighter. You might not be able to change every situation, but you reclaim your power to decide how you’ll move through it. And some days, that small shift in focus is enough to start feeling a little steadier.

So here’s what to do: grab a piece of paper and draw two columns. Title one “Things I Can Control” and the other “Things I Can’t.” Write down every single thing that’s weighing on you. Don’t filter, just let it all out. Then, sort it. Focus your attention on that first column. Let the second one stay on the page, not on your shoulders. This simple act can help you move through the noise and find clarity, one decision at a time.
