I define connection as the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued; when they can give and receive without judgment; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship. - Brené Brown

One Positive Action
Listen to someone without planning your response:
Most of us aren't really listening when someone else is talking. We’re scanning for openings, planning what to say next, rehearsing our defense before they even finish their sentence. It’s a survival strategy more than anything else. But when we move through conversations this way, we miss the whole point. We’re not connecting. We’re competing for space.
Listening without planning your response is uncomfortable at first because it asks you to sit with the uncertainty of not knowing what comes next. But it’s in that gap, between hearing and reacting, that real understanding has a chance to take root. You’re not rushing to fix, debate, or defend. You’re letting the other person’s words stand long enough to actually take them in.
It matters even more when you disagree. True listening doesn’t mean you’re agreeing or giving up your perspective. It just means you’re willing to stay present without immediately pushing back. That kind of presence isn’t easy. But it’s where trust grows. It’s where relationships stop being transactions and start being real.
In your next conversation, practice listening all the way through before you even think about your response. Let the silence stretch if it needs to. Give the other person the dignity of being heard without interruption. Then, when it’s your turn, speak from a place that isn’t just reacting, but actually understanding.
