Chronic Shame: Are You Suffering? A Path to Healing & Losing its Power

Shame is a topic that most people ignore their whole lives.

Despite some well-known authors on the topic in recent years, such as Brené Brown, it’s still a topic that’s not talked about that often in our society.

But here’s the thing.

Feeling shame is very common for most people, at least to some degree. And, it can be very painful and debilitating for many people.

Feeling some shame is natural, as in when you do something silly or embarrassing. You feel humiliated and may express it by blushing, sweating, or a rapid heartbeat. However, these feelings are typically overcome easily in a short time frame.

Chronic shame, on the other hand, is very different and for millions of people around the world, it is debilitating…

4 Practical Ways You Can Start to Embrace Uncertainty

Uncertainty is unpleasant, but it is part of life.

If we had everything our way, most of us would prefer to be well aware of what will happen every minute of every day. This would help us plan for pretty much anything, from the unpredicted rain to the loss of a loved one.

Sadly, we do not experience life our way all the time, and every day we have to deal with some level of uncertainty. We still plan and expect things to go a certain way, but in some cases, our lives simply don't go as we would have planned.

That might feel like the end of the world, but it shouldn't…

One Positive Action

Make a “Joy List”:

Joy is easy to overlook when you’re in the thick of things. Most of us are moving fast, juggling too much, and just trying to get through the day. But there are these tiny moments, fleeting, often quiet, that can pull us out of our heads and bring us back into something real. A certain smell, a sound, the feel of something familiar.

Most days, we’re so focused on what needs fixing or finishing that we forget to notice the good stuff that’s already happening. It’s not that joy isn’t there, it’s that we’re rarely tuned into it. Writing things down helps shift the focus, just a little. It reminds you that even when things feel overwhelming or flat, there are still some happy moments to be had.

There’s also something deeply personal about what makes each of us light up. For some people, it’s the first sip of hot coffee. For others, it’s hearing a favorite old song or seeing a dog in a backpack. These are small, specific things that land just right in the moment. Naming them gives us a way to come back to ourselves when everything feels like too much.

Right now, make a “Joy List.” Write down ten small things that make your day a little better, tiny stuff you actually notice and like. Maybe it’s warm socks straight from the dryer or hearing someone laugh in another room. Keep the list somewhere easy to find, and add to it whenever something catches you off guard in a good way. On the rough days, come back to it. It might not be a cure, but it’s something to hold onto, and you might even crack a smile when you look at it.

A little joy goes a long way, and most of us could use more of it.
