Rising Like a Phoenix: From Burned Out to Reinvention

There’s something hauntingly beautiful about the myth of the Phoenix.

A majestic bird consumed by its own flames, burning to ash, only to rise again, brighter, stronger, and more powerful than before. It doesn’t just survive the fire. It becomes something new because of it.

That image has stayed with me ever since I hit my own burnout wall decades ago.

A Personal Story About Burnout

I was juggling two jobs, trying to finish grad school, and convincing myself I could get through a divorce with a smile on my face. One evening at my second job, I was helping a customer when, out of nowhere, tears started rolling down my face…

One Positive Action

Take a break:

Our minds weren’t built to carry a constant stream of updates, headlines, opinions, and outrage. And yet, that’s the world we live in. A world where every scroll, every click, every alert pulls us into someone else’s urgency. It’s no wonder we feel overloaded, anxious, or numb. We’ve got too much coming in, and no space to make sense of any of it. Sometimes the most compassionate thing we can do for ourselves is step away from the noise.

You can care deeply and still need space. There’s a point where staying constantly plugged in stops being helpful and starts becoming a kind of emotional static. We weren’t meant to absorb everything, all at once, all the time. Stepping away for a bit is a way to protect your ability to stay present and steady, so that when you do engage, you can do it with clarity instead of exhaustion.

Giving yourself even a short break can help you come back to yourself. It’s a way of saying, I’m allowed to pause. I’m allowed to feel what I feel without absorbing everything around me. And in that pause, something settles. You remember what you value, what matters to you, and how you actually want to move through the world, not just react to it.

So here’s the invitation: take one hour (or more!) today and turn it all off. The news, the apps, the updates, just for a bit. Do something grounding instead: take a walk, make a meal, sit in the quiet, (seriously, when was the last time you just sat and watched the world go by?) or connect with someone face-to-face. Let your nervous system breathe. Let your thoughts be your own for a while. You can always plug back in, but don’t forget, you get to choose when.
